If you have been sexually assaulted, or think you have been but are not sure, you are encouraged to go to University Medical Center (UMC) Hospital for an exam by a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE). The address for UMC is 1800 W. Charleston, Las Vegas, NV 89102. Go to the Adult Emergency Department and tell them at the time of check-in at triage that you are there for the SANE exam. You do not need to contact an advocate directly, the nurse will reach out to our advocates who will come and meet with you at the hospital.
If you call to report the crime to the police first, they may be able to transport you to UMC for the exam.
There is never a charge to you for undergoing the SANE exam at UMC hospital. This is true even if you do not have any type of insurance. The purpose of this exam is to identify and treat any physical injuries you might have sustained during the assault, as well as to collect any possible evidence of the crime. You do NOT have to report the crime to law enforcement or pursue charges in order to have the exam done if you are an adult. If you are a minor, please keep in mind that the SANE nurse and medical personnel are mandated reporters of child abuse. All of your options will be explained to you by the nurse or advocate. The exam should ideally be done as soon as possible after the assault has occurred, but can be done up to 5 days later, and even if you have showered, etc. Currently, UMC is the only hospital in Clark County that offers the SANE exam for adults.
If possible, refrain from the following until you have had the exam completed:
- Showering or bathing
- Changing clothes
- Drinking, eating, or chewing gum
- Smoking
- Using the restroom or douching
- If you do have clothing, blankets, sheets or other items which may hold evidence, please put them in a PAPER bag or pillow case. Do not store items in plastic.
Advocates at the hospital can assist with resources, transportation back to your home or where you are staying, as well as with clothing if yours is taken as evidence.
